What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a new federal initiative designed to make dental care accessible to all Canadians, regardless of income. The plan aims to reduce the cost of oral health care, ensuring everyone can maintain good oral health.

Preventive Services

The CDCP covers a range of preventive services that includes, cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments.

Diagnostic Services

As necessary, our dentist might need X-Rays among other diagnostic procedures. This is one of the areas covered by the CDCP.

Restorative Services

Restorative services include fillings, root canals, dentures to name a few. Talk to our dentist for more details.

Oral Surgery

The CDCP covers oral surgeries such as extractions. There is a wide range of services that falls under oral surgeries, contact our office for details.

What treatments does the CDCP covers?

The CDCP covers a wide range of dental services, including:

  • Preventive services: cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments

  • Restorative services: fillings, root canals, dentures
  • Oral surgery: extractions

Am I eligible to benefit from the CDCP?

To qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), you must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Not have access to dental insurance. This means you don’t have dental insurance:
  • Have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000
  • Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
  • Have filed your tax return in the previous year

How should I apply for the CDCP?

When to apply

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is opening in phases. Make sure you meet all 4 of the eligibility requirements before applying. Check the schedule below to find out when you can apply.

  • Aged 65 or older - Now
  • Adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate - started June 27, 2024
  • Children under the age of 18 - started June 27, 2024
  • All remaining eligible residents (not in one of the above groups) - Starting in 2025

What do you need to apply

You’ll need to provide all of the following information about yourself and your spouse or common-law partner (if you have one):

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN) (if available for children)
  • Date of birth
  • Full name
  • Home and mailing address
  • List of dental coverage you have through government social programs (if any)
  • You and your spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must have filed your tax return for 2023 and have received your Notice of Assessment

When can I visit my dentist to use the CDCP?

Enrolment confirmation

Sun Life will manage the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) for the Government of Canada.

Once you’ve applied and we've confirmed that you qualify, we'll share your information with Sun Life, who will enroll you in the CDCP.

Check the status of your application.

Sun Life will then send you a welcome package within 3 months of applying. This package will include:

  • information on the CDCP
  • your member card
  • your coverage start date
